Nikki McKay trained in art and design at derby college of art, Bristol Old Vic theatre school and Nottingham Trent university. Also trained as a dancer from the age of three, she lives and works in Nottinghamshire as an artist, animator and lecturer.
Her animation 'without vertigo' was shown at the 1993 British short film festival at the barbican and was screened on central TV.
In 1992 Nikki won the east midlands arts animation award and she received development funding from the British film institute to work on new digital animation techniques. In 1997 she received a commission to develop a web page in the Nottingham now '97 festival and a digital art instillation shown at the Broadway cinema.
Recent animations have been screened at the Broadway Cinema Nottingham as part of the Bang Film Festival and can be viewed on their website.
Working from her own studio in Newark, Nikki's work has been exhibited throughout the uk including the Heffer gallery Cambridge, Mill Gate gallery Newark, chalk farm gallery London, the Byard gallery Nottingham, priory gatehouse Worksop, Beatrice royal gallery Southampton and in Cannes. From the permanent show at the cafe bleu in Newark, her work has sold to Atlanta USA, France, Spain and to several celebrities in the uk. Monticatini Gallery Italy 2006 .Studio visits are welcome and the artist accepts commissions for large and small canvases.
The paintings use colour and the female form to create a language of mood and movement as expressed from the point of view of the subject rather than as a voyeur. The large ladies, often considered an unfashionable concept of beauty, are portrayed as positive images of womanhood. The work of the artist derives some inspiration from that of Matisse, Tamara de Lempicka and the techniques of contemporary dance.
'Hopping to Vivaldi' was featured on Louis Theroux's documentary about the life of Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee (BBC 2001).
